Cynthia R. Field

Cynthia R. Field has pursued a long career in architectural history practice and teaching.  At the Smithsonian Institution she was Chair and creator of its Architectural History and Historic Preservation Office and Associate Director in their Office of Physical Planning.  Her preference for collaborative work is evident in publications she did with a team. Such publications include The National Mall: Rethinking Washington’s Monumental Core (2008), Paris on the Potomac (2007) and The Castle: An Illustrated History of the Smithsonian Building (1993),all of which she co-edited and to which also contributed scholarly work.  Having retired from the Smithsonian, she became adjunct faculty at the School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, University of Maryland.  She also taught as adjunct faculty at Georgetown University, George Washington University, and at Catholic University’s School of Architecture.

 Dr. Field is known for her work as one of the founding members of the National Building Museum and has served on its board since its inception.
